Posted February 22, 2012 by David Radd A game called Pokemon Yellow recently launched on the App Store, “developed” by a company called Home of Anime. Before the $0.99 app was pulled, it rose all the way to number 2 on the paid apps charts. Despite numerous reader reviews complaining that the app crashed soon after launching, it was estimated that it made over $10,000 before it was removed from the App Store

The impending launch of the iPad 3 ( rumored for March 7) so close to the US launch of the Sony PlayStation Vita immediately leads to the question: Are these two devices competing? Some would say no; the PS Vita is intended to be a game console primarily, with some other uses and capabilities, while the iPad 3 (as with the current iPad 2) is a general purpose device that also happens to play games. That's an abstract analysis; in the real world most people don't have the money to casually spend $250 or $300 on a game device, or $500 or more on a tablet

Posted February 20, 2012 by Ben Strauss Nintendo has much to celebrate, now that their latest handheld console has hit over 5 million units sold in Japan, as said by Media Create. The news means that it took the 3DS a full year to hit 5 million total units, beating out the DS by four weeks and the GBA by six. The 3DS was marred by many problems at launch, starting out particularly slow thanks to a low amount of first-party and third-party content offerings. The release of many games such as Super Mario 3D Land and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D has helped sales surge remarkably over the past 12 weeks. The figures from Media Create and posted to Andriasang are for actual sales figures from retailer to consumers. Ben is a recent graduate of Xavier University.

Look, let’s just cut right to the meat of the Jill sandwich here: Resident Evil Revelations is a game you can sink your teeth into. It layers a delectable amount of graphical polish on top of a beefy, action-packed showpiece for the technology of the 3DS, and tops it all off with just the right amount of aged, B-movie cheese. Toss in a side of unhealthily addictive multiplayer, and you’ve got one heck of a value meal.

Posted January 30, 2012 by Ben Strauss Speaking at yet another investor Q&A session, Nintendo head honcho Satoru Iwata confirmed that the Wii U would not be drawn into another technology race with the upcoming PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 platforms. "As we will showcase the Wii U at E3 in June this year, the detailed announcements must wait until then, but we are aiming to make a system which shall not be forced into competing with the others where the contenders can fight only with massive developer resources and long development times as their weapons," he said during the session. The Wii U will seemingly regale in the same strategy enjoyed by the Wii, one that would focus on the controller functionality, rather than the technical achievements for the games. "Looking at the software for home console systems, there are certainly the software titles for which very rich graphics must be reproduced on HD displays and which demand a large number of developers to spend a very long time to develop. It is one of the truths that a certain number of such software titles must be prepared, or the consumers will not be satisfied. But we do not think that any and all the software must be created in that fashion.

Tales of Innocence: R for Vita also charted in the preliminary data, although it will do little more than provide a tiny bump this week given how low the opening for the game was.

Posted January 27, 2012 by Ben Strauss Nintendo has definitely made it clear that 3D is not the only feature of the 3DS, which is finally picking up in sales. Earlier concerns about headaches caused by the 3D effects put many consumers off, but Nintendo has spun the marketing wheel to remind those affected that the console offers more than just 3D. To help prove that point, a traditional 2D Mario title is in the works, it has been announced. Nintendo will be working to bring out a new 3DS title, sans 3D, to gamers by the end of the fiscal year in March 2013. Ben is a recent graduate of Xavier University. You can see him ramble on about gaming, gamification, military-related gaming and manly things on his Twitter @Sinner101GR .

Posted January 27, 2012 by Ben Strauss Nintendo might not be doing so hot if you ask investors, but news of strong software sales should hopefully help to boost the company's fortunes as it prepares for the release of its next-generation console. The company reported that Super Mario 3D Land has become the first 3DS title to surpass 5 million units sold, with other popular titles closing in. All in all, 5.03 million units have been sold for Super Mario 3D Land , while 4.54 million units were picked up by consumers for Mario Kart 7 . Other big winners include the Ocarina of Time 3D offering, which hit a respectable 2.49 million units. Additionally, sales for the latest Zelda title on Wii have been respectable in a time of the Wii’s decline. Skyward Sword punched in over 3.42 million sales overall for holiday 2011.
Posted January 27, 2012 by Ben Strauss The Nintendo 3DS has led to a mixture of emotions for many in the industry. With sales just now picking up at a time when Nintendo has been feeling the economic hurt, the company remains vigilant in turning the product into a profitable flagship device. Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata told investors that the company has been taking “drastic measures” to get the 3DS to a better place in the market, working to create as large an installed base as possible. With big holiday releases and big plans for the handheld alongside the Wii U, Nintendo hopes to “maximize the effect.” While things are looking down for the company at the present, Iwata reiterated that the publisher and manufacturer expects the device to turn a profit in the near future, thanks to a reduction in manufacturing costs. "In the first half of the next fiscal term, we are now anticipating to get out of the situation that we sell the hardware below cost,” he said. It is interesting to note that Nintendo has long sold their devices profitably, even at launch. A rough patch from launch to the beginning of the holiday season saw massive sales decline for Nintendo, worrying many investors. Iwata made sure to affirm that 2012 is looking brighter, with a strong third-party line up and the recently announced Nintendo Network looking to launch relatively soon. The company has made it clear that digital business concerns are paramount for the company. Ben is a recent graduate of Xavier University

Posted January 17, 2012 by Ben Strauss Hudson Soft is to be formally dissolved starting March 1, despite Konami’s initial call to “strengthen Hudson’s net worth” and “support and enhance [the] organization.” The news comes from Konami, who expressed that the long-time developer would be absorbed into Konami Digital Entertainment, effectively ending the Hudson Soft name. Hudson Soft is most remembered for their work with Bomberman , a franchise that has seen dozens of titles across a multitude of platforms. While frequently partnering with Nintendo, Hudson Soft was an independent studio up until Konami purchased them in April. It's unclear at the moment if Hudson's franchises will continue to be produced.
Posted January 17, 2012 by Ben Strauss 2012 might not be a console launch year besides the Wii U, but it does mark the start of the next-generation handheld race. This year might be particularly important, as both Sony and Nintendo have pushed two rather impressive pieces of technology out for the masses. That race might even be rather significant, says analyst firm International Data Corporation. "Especially given the 3DS price drop in mid-2011 and in light of respectable initial demand for Vita in Japan this past December, it appears that 2012 is shaping up to be a rebound year for dedicated handhelds," says Lewis Ward, IDC's research manager for gaming. "It's absolutely true that a mind-boggling number of games have been downloaded to iOS- and Android-powered devices in the past year, but only a fraction of those games were paid for and most of those were of the $1 to $3 variety." Essentially, the firm believes that such hardware is going to make a big impact on consumers thanks to the growing social gaming trend. "An interesting piece of this story is what's happening demographically," adds Ward
