Weekly Sales Analysis, 15 December – Vita 1 Year Anniversary

The Wii U was in its second week on Japan, third week in Europe and fourth week in North America. Hardware sales increased 13 percent this week. Year on year sales are down 25 percent, despite the added sales of the Wii U. It is also the one year anniversary of the launch of the PlayStation Vita in Japan.
No games debuted in the top 30 this week.
Software milestones this week in the top 30: Just Dance 4 (Wii) passed the three million mark; Call of Duty: Black Ops II (PS3) passed the eight million mark; Halo 4 (X360) passed the six million mark; Kinect Adventures! (X360) passed the 19 million mark; Nintendo Land (WiiU) passed the one million mark; New Super Mario Bros. U (WiiU) passed the one million mark; Mario Kart 7 (3DS) passed the seven million mark; Need for Speed: Most Wanted (PS3) passed the one million mark; and Madden NFL 13 (X360) passed the two million mark.
Hardware home console sales week on week are up for the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360, and down for the Wii U. Xbox 360 sales are up 143,527 (23%) to 757,880 units sold. PlayStation 3 sales are up 134,944 (23%) to 711,509 units sold. The Wii U sold 395,016 units, a decrease of 206,696 (-34%). The Wii sold 301,968 units, which is up 49,484 (20%).
Handheld sales are up across the board week on week. The 3DS sold 897,655 units, which is up 215,259 (32%) week on week. The DS is up 32,858 (18%) to 211,067 units sold. The PlayStation Vita is up 21,321 (14%) to 171,219 units sold. The PSP sold 77,564 units which is up 22,887 (42%) compared to last week. Total week on week sales are up 413,584 (13%) to 3.52 million units.
No platforms were up year-over-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 119,131 (-11%), the Wii is down 479,054 (-61%), and the Xbox 360 is down 231,839 (-23%). The PSP is down 167,977 (-68%), the DS is down 119,131 (-36%), the Vita is down 151,269 (-47%) and the 3DS is down 348,788 (-28%). Year on year sales are down 1.19 million units (-25%).
The Xbox 360 is the top selling platform for a second week in a row and for the fifth time in 10 weeks. The PlayStation 3 led for the other five weeks. The Xbox 360 has a 43 percent market share for the seventh generation; the PlayStation 3 has a 40 percent market share; and the Wii has a 17 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all three home consoles (minus the Wii U) are up.
3DS hardware remains well above its rival, the PlayStation Vita, and every other handheld. The 3DS outsold the Vita by more than 5 to 1. The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by more than 4 to 1. The PlayStation Vita has nearly outsold its predecessor, the PSP, by more than 2 to 1. The DS has a 73 percent market share this week for the seventh generation handhelds and the PSP has a 27 percent. The 3DS has an 84 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 16 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four handhelds are up.
No games debuted in the top 30 this week.
Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Just Dance 4 (Wii) is at the top of the charts with sales of 852,258. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (X360) is at number two with sales of 786,011 units. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (PS3) is at number three with sales of 651,304 units. Halo 4 (X360) is at number four with sales of 530,538. Assassin’s Creed III (PS3) is at number five with sales of 400,971.
New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) is at number six with sales of 385,532. Kinect Adventures! (X360) is at number seven with sales of 385,316. Assassin’s Creed III (X360) is at number eight with sales of 317,073. Far Cry 3 (X360) is at number nine with sales of 288,350. FIFA 13 (PS3) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 268,207.
Software home console sales week on week are up for the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360, and down for the Wii U. The Xbox 360 sold the most games this week with sales of 8.75 million, an increase of 1.35 million (18%). The PlayStation 3 sold 7.23 million games this week, an increase of 634,170 (10%). Wii software sales are up 1.13 million units (24%) to 5.89 million games sold. The Wii U sold 846,457 units games, a decrease of 144,577 (-15%).
Handheld software sales week on week are up across the board. The DS sold 3.01 million games, an increase of 619,045 games (26%) week on week. The 3DS sold 2.77 million games, which is up 695,770 (33%). The Vita sold 624,859 games, an increase of 147,658 (31%). PSP game sales are up 78,342 (18%) to 520,905 games sold. Total combined software is up 4.51 million units (228%) week on week to 26.74 million.
Year on year software totals is up for the PlayStation Vita and down for everything else. The PlayStation 3 is down 1.46 million units (-17%), the Wii is down 4.58 million units (-44%) and the Xbox 360 is down 978,147 units (-10%). The DS is down 1.77 million units (-37%), the PSP is down 803,309 units (-61%) and the 3DS is down 289,511 units (-9%). Total combined software is down 8.68 million units (-23%) games sold year on year.
Software sales have increase for two weeks for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii and have dropped for the Wii U for one week. The Xbox 360 has led for the sixth straight week and for the seventh time in 10 weeks. The PlayStation 3 led for the other three weeks. The Xbox 360 has a 40 percent market share, the PlayStation 3 with 33 percent, and the Wii with 27 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago all three home consoles (minus the Wii U) are up.
The DS sold the most software this week and has increased for the fourth straight week. It has also led for seven of the last 10 weeks. The 3DS led for the other three weeks. The DS has an 85 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 15 percent market share. The 3DS has an 82 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 18 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the all four handhelds are up.
