Weekly Sales Analysis, 20 October – Doom 3 BFG, Skylanders Giants

Overview

Hardware sales overall have increased, though the PlayStation 3 and 3DS are down slightly, while the Xbox 360 and Wii had the biggest increase. Overall week on week hardware sales are up four percent. The 3DS continues to be the only platform up year on year. Overall hardware sales are down 23 percent year on year.

Four games debuted in the top 30 this week. Doom 3 BFG Edition (X360) debuted at number nine with sales of 84,544. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number 13 with sales of 71,788. Software milestones this week in the top 30: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3) passed the eight million mark.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware home console sales week on week are up for the Xbox 360 and Wii and down for the PlayStation 3. PlayStation 3 sales are down 8,361 (-4%) to 216,318 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are up 25,130 (16%) to 180,558 units sold. The Wii sold 49,388 units, which is up 11,446 (30%).

Handheld sales are up for the DS, PSP and Vita, and is down for the 3DS. The 3DS sold 215,764 units, which is down 7,205 (-3%) week on week. The PlayStation Vita is up 369 (1%) to 38,076 units sold. The PSP sold 35,187 units which is up 1,973 (6%) compared to last week. The DS is up 2,611 (10%) to 27,517 units sold. Total week on week sales are up 25,963 (4%) to 762,808.

The 3DS continues be the only platform up year on year. The PlayStation 3 is down 22,656 (-9%), the Wii is down 117,434 (-70%), and the Xbox 360 is down 25,520 (16%). The PSP is down 49,274 (-58%) the DS is down 50,359 (-65%) and the 3DS is up 4,834 (2%). Year on year sales are down 222,333 (-23%).

Hardware Home Consoles

The gap between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox has decreased, though the PlayStation 3 still holds a 36,000 lead. The PlayStation 3 has been the bestselling home console all year. The PlayStation 3 has a 48 percent market share; the Xbox 360 has a 41 percent market share; and the Wii has an 11 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are up, while the Wii is down.

Hardware Handhelds

3DS hardware remains well above its rival, the PlayStation Vita, outselling it by nearly 6 to 1. The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by nearly 8 to 1, while the Vita barely outsold its predecessor, the PSP, only by 2,889 units. The PSP has a 56 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the DS has a 44 percent. The 3DS has an 85 percent market share for the next generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 15 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS and PlayStation Vita are up, and the DS and PSP are down.

Worldwide Software

Four games debuted in the top 30 this week. Doom 3 BFG Edition (X360) debuted at number nine with sales of 84,544. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number 13 with sales of 71,788. The game launched in North America and Europe.

Little Battlers eXperience W (PSP) debuted at number 10 with sales of 80,132. The game launched in Japan.

Skylanders Giants (Wii) debuted at number 14 with sales of 67,884. The game launched in Europe.

Dance Central 3 (X360) debuted at number 19 with sales of 55,118. The game launched worldwide.
