Weekly Sales Analysis, 6 December – Wii U Launches in Japan

Overview
The Wii U was released in Japan this week, while it is in its second week on sale in Europe and third week in North America. Hardware sales have increased by a quarter this week. Year on year sales are down 15 percent, despite the added sales of the Wii U and PlayStation Vita.
One game debuted in the top 30 this week. Yakuza 5 (PS3) debuted at number seven with sales of 360,123.
Software milestones this week in the top 30: Call of Duty: Black Ops II (X360) passed the nine million mark; Call of Duty: Black Ops II (PS3) passed the seven million mark; New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) passed the four million mark; Assassin’s Creed III (X360) passed the three million mark; FIFA 13 (PS3) passed the five million mark; and Kinect Sports (X360) passed the five million mark.
Worldwide Hardware
Hardware home console sales week on week are up across the board. Xbox 360 sales are up 121,203 (25%) to 614,353 units sold. PlayStation 3 sales are up 67,537 (13%) to 576,565 units sold. The Wii U sold 610,384 units, an increase of 262,045 (75%). The Wii sold 252,484 units, which is up 37,135 (17%).
Handheld sales are up across the board week on week. The 3DS sold 682,396 units, which is up 140,062 (26%) week on week. The PlayStation Vita is up 24,005 (19%) to 152,049 units sold. The DS is up 26,878 (18%) to 178,209 units sold. The PSP sold 54,677 units which is up 10,868 (25%) compared to last week. Total week on week sales are down 689,733 (28%) to 3.12 million units.
No platforms were up year-over-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 61,268 (-10%), the Wii is down 396,959 (-61%), and the Xbox 360 is down 208,171 (-25%). The PSP is down 155,120 (-74%), the DS is down 109,672 (-38%) and the 3DS is down 402,208 (-37%). Year on year sales are down 570,965 units (-15%).
The Xbox 360 has outsold the PlayStation 3 for the fifth time in 2012. The Wii U launched in Japan and is now available in all major regions. It was also the bestselling home console for the week. The Xbox 360 has a 43 percent market share for the seventh generation; the PlayStation 3 has a 40 percent market share; and the Wii has a 17 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all three home consoles (minus the Wii U) are up.
3DS hardware remains well above its rival, the PlayStation Vita, outselling it by more than 4 to 1. The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by nearly 4 to 1. The PlayStation Vita has nearly outsold its predecessor, the PSP, by nearly than 3 to 1. The DS has a 77 percent market share this week for the seventh generation handhelds and the PSP has a 23 percent. The 3DS has an 82 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has an 18 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four handhelds are up.
Worldwide Software
One game debuted in the top 30 this week. Yakuza 5 (PS3) debuted at number seven with sales of 360,123. The game launched in Japan.
Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Just Dance 4 (Wii) is at the top of the charts with sales of 757,155. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (X360) is at number two of the charts with sales of 637,880 units. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (PS3) is at number three with sales of 570,359 units. Far Cry 3 (X360) is at number four with sales of 488,364. Halo 4 (X360) is at number five with sales of 395,719.
Kinect Adventures (X360) is at number six with sales of 385,380. Far Cry 3 (PS3) is at number eight with sales of 339,577. Assassin’s Creed III (PS3) is at number nine with sales of 318,645. New Super Mario Bros. U (WiiU) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 317,876.
Week on week software sales for home consoles are up across the board. The Xbox 360 sold the most games this week with sales of 7.74 million, an increase of 1.06 million (16%). The PlayStation 3 sold 7.02 million games this week, an increase of 916,911 (15%). Wii software sales are up 1.13 million units (29%) to 5.08 million games sold. The Wii U sold 1.01 million units games, an increase of 309,505 (44%).
Handheld software sales week on week are up across the board. The DS sold 2.69 million games, an increase of 521,309 games (24%) week on week. The 3DS sold 2.15 million games, which is up 505,233 (24%). PSP game sales are up 37,626 (7%) to 540,539 games sold. The Vita sold 510,823 games, an increase of 22,897 (5%). Total combined software is up 4.51 million units (20%) week on week to 26.74 million.
Year on year software totals is up for the PlayStation 3 and down for everything else. The PlayStation 3 is up 107,474 (2%), the Wii is down 3.51 million units (-41%) and the Xbox 360 is up 189,475 units (-2%). The DS is down 1.35 million units (-33%), the PSP is down 455,558 units (-46%) and the 3DS is down 1.17 million units (-35%). Total combined software is down 5.05 million units (-16%) games sold year on year.
Software sales have increased for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 after two weeks of decreasing. The Xbox 360 has led for the fifth straight week and for the sixth time in 10 weeks. The PlayStation 3 led for the other four weeks. The Xbox 360 has a 39 percent market share, the PlayStation 3 with 35 percent, and the Wii with 26 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago all three home consoles (minus the Wii U) are up.
The DS sold the most software this week and has increased for the seventh straight week. It has also led for seven of the last 10 weeks. The 3DS led for the other three weeks. The DS has an 83 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 17 percent market share. The 3DS has an 81 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 19 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the all four handhelds are up.
